9 ways to enjoy downtime with your horse
Riding’s not the only way to have fun with your horse. Here are some great out-of-the-saddle ideas to help you enjoy your time together this summer
Spending time on the yard with your horse reaps so many benefits, from boosting your bond to improving and protecting your mental health. If you don’t fancy riding one day, or if it’s your horse’s day off, why not do something a bit different? There are plenty of things you can get up to from the ground to improve his lifestyle while enjoying each other’s company at the same time.
1. Find the spot
Horses are sociable creatures and te amedup with their pals in the field you’ll probably notice regular mutual grooming taking place. You, too, can be your horse’s mutual grooming partner, so spend time finding the places he enjoys being scratched the most.
Favourite spots tend to be on the withers, the top of the neck or along his back and hindquarters. He’ll let you know when you’ve hit the spot so watch carefully for signs he’s enjoying it, such as a quivering lip or his eyes glazing over. He may even try to return the favour and groom you back.
