Working out
How much protein does my horse need and can I work out whether he’s getting enough?
Fran Smith
Jaz Grogan answers:
A Protein’s a key nutrient in your horse’s diet, containing amino acids that support muscle development and topline. Protein is also the main component of hair and hoof.
The National Research Council (NRC) declares minimum requirements of protein and other micronutrients, based on a horse’s age and workload. For example, a 500kg horse at rest requires 630g crude protein (CP), while the same horse in hard work needs 862g.
