Seeking the best person to help you progress with your riding needn’t be a minefield

If you want to improve your riding and your horse’s way of going (who doesn’t?), you’ll benefit from having regular training with an experienced instructor but, with so many out there, how do you find the right one? Just because someone else raves about their trainer doesn’t mean that person will suit you. After all, some riders like to be pushed to their limits and don’t mind being told the whole truth, warts and all, whereas others need more encouragement from an instructor with a gentler approach.
We take a look at some of the important considerations to make when it comes to finding a trainer you work best with. With the right help in place, you’ll find lessons are something you really look forward to and that your newly acquired knowledge will give you the tools to progress your riding skills to a whole new level.
Where to start
Many riders choose instructors based on recommendations from friends, and this can be a good place to begin. If, after hearing more about their trainer, you think they might suit you then ask whether you can watch one or two of your friend’s lessons before you book one yourself.
Another useful place to look is on social media. You could ask for recommendations on a local equestrian page, stating what type of lesson you want – eg jumping or flatwork – and any special requirements, such as someone who’s good at building confidence or a person who can help you progress up the levels of dressage.
