RIOTING ROADWORK

In order to get on to the common where I hack, I need to ride on the roads, which is fine as my horse and I both really enjoy some roadwork. The majority of other road users are polite and respectful, giving us space or waiting for me to tuck into a gateway to let them past, but there’s always one who’s in a rush and can’t slow down for the short amount of time to pass us. I have a bit more patience for non-horsey people, but quite often I’m overtaken too fast and too close by people going to or from other local yards, or the riding school next door. I’m sorry that you’re late for your lesson, or farrier, but is it really that hard to slow down and create space for vulnerable road users?

CONTINUING CARE

Before you even put a foot in the stirrup, grooming’s an easy way to warm up your horse before riding. Vigorously brushing his body will help promote circulation to the skin, muscles, limbs and joints, helping him feel flexible and stay healthy. Visit bit.ly/ GROOMING_BENEFITS

Essentially forming a grazing strip running around or across your land, track grazing is a system that’s relatively easy and not too costly to set up using electric fencing. Nevertheless, your track will require a little planning to ensure it meets your horses’ needs and be practical for you to use. Visit bit.ly/TRACK_ SYSTEMS
