Learn your lesson
Every time you interact with your horse, you’re teaching him something new. But is there a way to make sure they’re lessons worth learning?
For most owners, their horses offer an escape –a moment of peace away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. People often speak about their horses getting them through tough times, too, whether that’s stress, bereavement or health issues, and the yard can be a real place of refuge. But take a moment to consider who you are to your horse. What does he get out of the time he spends with you?
Horses are herd animals who organise themselves around their leader. The leader has to be hypervigilant and responsible for the herd’s safety and wellbeing. While I’m a huge advocate for focusing on creating a balanced partnership with your horse, in your relationship with him you’re still required to take the leading role. This means it’s your job to guide him, set boundaries and make the rules clear and consistent. Think of it this way – all the time you’re with your horse, you’re training him.
