Horse&Rider answers:
Finding your horse trapped or injured is incredibly stressful, but the most important thing you can do is stay calm. Initially, keep your distance from your horse – especially if he’s panicked – because you could be injured yourself should he get himself free or kick out. The first thing you should do is always call your vet, even if it’s out of hours, because a trapped horse is an emergency.
With your vet en route, ask someone to get your helmet and a pair of gloves for you and, keeping your distance as much as possible, try to work out whether your horse is injured and make note of where he’s stuck. Is it just his hoof or is he caught above the knee or hock?
