For medical reasons, I keep my retired pony, Sonny, out as much as I can – and I’m lucky that my yard allows 24-hour turnout for most of the year. The ponies he lives with are similar ages to him and, like Sonny, are good-doers. As the autumn/weather has set in and we’re looking towards winter, I’ve received increasing comments about putting out hay, despite the ponies being in a field with more than double the amount of grass they had all summer. “There’s nothing in the grass now,” I hear. Well, with the warm and wet weather we’ve had through autumn so far, I’m not sure about that. My good-doer hasn’t dropped a pound since spring! Let’s save the hay for when ‘real winter’ kicks in, shall we?
