We caught up with Jack DeJohnette on his recent visit to London's jazz festival, and who, despite turning 70 last year is still as hungry for creative fulfillment as he was when he started out playing. With a CV that reads like a who’s-who of music, Jack is definitely a drummer that deserves massive recognition for his substantial contribution to modern drumming. Elsewhere, and it was back in July last year when Ian Thomas graced our front cover, giving us a very insightful interview about his work on BBC1 talent show 'The Voice', and once he'd given us his exclusive behind the scenes view of the show, he continued chatting to our man Brent Keefe about his career in general, and here we bring you the rest of his revealing interview. We also spend some time with TV funnyman Rowland Rivron, who tells us all about his life behind the kit and his latest musical venture with some very well known friends. We catch up with London-based player Bob Knight, who has worked with some of the biggest names in pop as well as being MD and house drummer for a string of very popular TV shows. Finally, we hear from Carlos Hercules, who gives us a brief insight into his percussive world.
Reviews-wise, and we take an exclusive, world-premiere first look at Highwood’s new Malleus pedals. Launched at last year’s London Drum Show, the pedals are chocked-full of innovative new design ideas and neat features, and with superb build quality and a competitive price tag look set to be one of the hottest products of 2013! We also spend some time with Drum Craft’s Series 6 kit: a six-piece birch kit including a full compliment of hardware for less than a grand, as well as some hand-built custom percussion courtesy of EcHo custom drums. Amedia show off more of their fantastic range of bespoke Turkish cymbals, and we take a look at a little kit from Sonix.
All of this plus our usual mix of news, including details of the ten chosen finalists for the 2013 Young Drummer of the Year competition...
