In this month’s issue of Drummer we shine the spotlight on our recent visit to Anaheim, California for the annual NAMM show, where we got to see first-hand all of the latest tasty new gear being launched in 2013. Our 8-page report brings you the highlights as well as plenty of pictures of the newest products to entice and excite us over the next twelve months. Interviews-wise, and we spend some quality time with the always-inspiring Will Calhoun, who aside from a raft of new projects tells us about how he draws influence from his world travels, buries snare drums in the ground for four years to get the sound he’s always been looking for and that Living Colour are currently recording new material in advance of their 25th anniversary tour. We also hear from Faithless’ percussive powerhouses Andy Treacey and Sudha Kheterpal on how they create so much on-stage energy for the stadium-shaking dance act as well as getting the final word on drumming from current Example sticksman John Jenkins. Finally on the interview front, we bring you possibly the most candid interview ever when we speak to drum-guru Martin Ranscombe about how he’s managed to find methods to continue his career despite suffering from a rare bone condition and the long list of challenges it has presented for him over the years.
We also bring you two exclusive first reviews when we take a look at Korg’s new Wavedrum Global Edition, which is the perfect way to use technology to expand your percussive palette, as well as Guru Drumworks fantastic Origin Series Classic Kit. With it’s diminutive bass drum, completely undrilled shells and distinctive wooden hoops we bring you the verdict as to whether this kit sounds as stunning as it looks.
Alongside all of this we have our report from the 2013 Young Drummer Of The Year final, regular tuition section, news, features and views from the world of drumming.
