The BBC have been in denial for five years

A FEW MONTHS before the 2014 independence referendum, as she was preparing to launch her ill-fated replacement for Newsnight Scotland, the BBC’s Sarah Smith was asked in a newspaper interview about her attitude to accusations of bias. She received few points for deep reflection when she tritely declared that as long as she was slated roughly equally by both sides, she’d know she was getting the balance just about right. In making that claim she was guilty of one of the classic logical fallacies (the equidistance fallacy), but it’s perhaps understandable that broadcast journalists will always reach for the nearest comfort blanket when their neutrality is questioned.
