Feel Good Buying Books

Alex J. Craig on where to find good books without feeding eeding a monster

Leakeys Inverness

WHEN FORMER Wall Street executive Jeff Bezos decided to get into the internet sales business, his aim was to make money. To this end (according to Wikipedia ‘History of Amazon’), he made a list of twenty types of product that could be sold online, then reduced it to a list of five, and finally decided on books. He chose books for business reasons: there’s worldwide demand for reading material, there’s lots of them available to sell, the unit price is low, and they’re straightforward to store and ship. When Amazon was launched in 1994 there was a lot of scepticism, but within four years the company was doing so well it decided to apply its model to a whole range of products other than books.
