The omens are good. Ashcroft’s latest poll shows a majority for Independence and that poll takes no account of young potential voters and Europeans in Scotland who are dismayed by England’s increasing xenophobia. Add to that the slide toward a hard Brexit and the economic shock to the country. All of us have friends who voted No in 2014 who are now convinced of the merits of an Independent Scotland within the European Community. Wonderful times await!

But haud yer horses.

For the Westminster Parliament, the establishment, the powerful financial and governmental concerns which benefit, at the moment, from Scotland’s impotent status, independence would be a monumental headache. Think of the $40 billion dollars of oil a year. Think of the vast sum that Westminster keeps to spend on Scotland’s supposed behalf. Consider that since 2015 Scotland has had a £15billion trade surplus while the UK has had a deficit of £496 billion. Or that the UK’s defence policy rests on a Scottish base. Or that in food and drink and electricity Scotland’s resources flow south, often uncredited, and across the world. Or… but you get the message.
