My name is …YOOG! (A Scot in Exile)

The event cast a shadow over the name of Davidson for the next three and a half centuries

My name is Yoog, but that is only a recent appellation. Born and bred in Glasgow, Scotland, I began working in Paris in March 2013, forced abroad by the failings of bankers and politicians, but happy enough to be following in the tradition of the “Auld Alliance” between the Scots and French. My real name is Hugh (pronounced Hyoo), but the French do not pronounce the letter H, the letter U is pronounced “oo” and they don’t realise that the G should be silent. So for now I am Yoog, an almost unrecognisable form of my Gaelic name which originates from the ancient British sky deity, Lleu (pronounced Hloo) or in Irish Lugh (pronounced Loo).

DAVIDSON

My second name is Davidson, my mother’s maiden name which hails from the north east of Scotland, Angus to be more specific. The Davidsons formed one of the three divisions of the ancient Clan Chattan (The Men of the Cat) confederated with Clans MacIntosh and MacPherson. My grandfather, George Davidson, served with the Seaforth Highlanders during the Great War. He survived the trenches and was awarded the Military Medal in 1918 which is now on display in the regimental museum at Fort George near Inverness.
