THERE’S been a lot of discussion recently, some of it conducted in the pages of this magazine, about the best time to go for a second Scottish independence referendum. There are some within the upper echelons of the SNP who have suggested that we should delay holding another referendum until such time as the party hierarchy feels more comfortable with the idea. Some leading lights in the SNP have aired the view that the party should go back to the Scottish people in the Holyrood elections of 2021 seeking a renewal of its mandate for a referendum. Then there’s everyone else in the independence movement.
