A good number of years ago, the never-ending pursuit of sensationalism by the producers of Question Time led them to extend an invitation to American talk show king Jerry Springer. The results were not quite as unedifying as might have been expected – in fact Springer, less well known as a one-time mayor of Cincinnati, challenged viewers with a serious and uncomfortable argument that is all too rarely heard on British television. He pointed out how scared he would be to live in a country like the UK where there is no codified constitution to protect individuals against the tyranny of the majority.
