Politics is personal

As most of you will be aware, social media services, such as Facebook and Twitter, commonly ask users to provide a short bio; a few words intended to tell others something about who you are. Or who you think you are. Or what you want others to think you are. Mine reads as follows,

Thinker. Listener. Talker. Reader. Writer. None of my attitudes are immutable. None of my conclusions are final. None of my opinions are humble.

What I have found over the years is that some people understand immediately the import of these few words. They get it. Others most certainly do not. They react very negatively. Especially to that final sentence. Occasionally, they react with a degree of indignant anger which is quite inexplicable. Typically, they object that the text is meaningless. Or they denounce the claims as pretentious. Sometimes both. As I have discovered, wondering aloud how something can be both meaningless and pretentious does little to placate their ire.

Most people, of course, aren’t bothered one way or the other. The vast majority will never even be interested enough to look at the bio. Of those that do, a large proportion will simply shrug and move on without a second thought.
