Blind Spot on the Road

Midhope Castle, West Lothian, better known as Outlander’s Lallybroch. Pic shutterstock

I don’t know if you’ve ever watched Outlander. I haven’t, though people whose views I respect tell me that the Jacobite time-travel epic is mince. However, it employs a lot of people in Scotland and attracts tourists, so even if it is, let’s welcome it through clenched teeth.

I may not have seen Outlander, but I have seen the effects of Outlander tourism. The Devil’s Pulpit is a gorge and waterfall that features in the programme. It’s in Finnich Glen near the junction of the A809 and B834, a mile south-east of Croftamie. The patch of rough ground at the junction is now regularly packed with cars, as are the roadsides along the formerly quiet B834. It causes such noise and inconvenience for local people that it even made the Daily Record. Now there’s infamy.
