Reader, I’m going to invite you to do something that may not come naturally. I’m going to ask you to feel sorry for Murdo Fraser. The Tory veteran is plagued by constant reminders from political opponents that he has stood for election seven times and “lost” on every single occasion. Admittedly that’s a funny, immensely satisfying, ‘truthy’ jibe, but there are disturbing signs that some people are no longer content to merely enjoy it as a form of entertainment. They believe it to be literally true, and are angry about it. Fraser has come to be perceived as an appointed rather than elected parliamentarian. And that’s grossly unjust.
