The Etruscans called this place ‘Fufluna’ (we know this much from the discovery of their coins) and the shift from ‘F’ to ‘P’ is quite common (it’s why, for example, the Italian farfalla, butterfly, becomes papillon in French), yet because the Etruscans didn’t write much down, we don’t know very much more about the place than this. They were here by 900 BC (and of course in a sense, they still are here), they certainly made metal here, and we think they may have made wine here too. Their harbour continued as a port into Roman times.
