No more popping out for a crafty one in the calle
Visitors to Venice could soon be encouraged to ditch their cigarettes while in the city as the mayor plans to introduce a ban on smoking outdoors. The move is the latest initiative in a long line of regulations aimed at tackling the excesses of tourism in the city and making Venice a more pleasant space to be, for visitors and locals alike. Luigi Brugnaro was reportedly so impressed by the non-smoking areas he saw on a visit to Tokyo that he’d like to introduce similar measures in Venice. The ban would initially cover some of the city’s most crowded areas such as the Rialto Bridge and St Mark’s Square. Authorities hope that the move would not simply mean cleaner air for locals and tourists in busy areas, but would also cut down on the significant problem of cigarette butts being discarded on Venice’s streets.
