Whether for the garden, allotment or smallholding, there are several positives to keeping your own ducks in a step towards more self-sufficiency and improving the condition of your patch, wherever you grow your crops. Ducks can be hugely beneficial to a garden and can assist a gardener. For example, they are fantastic weeders and pest controllers. They will keep the weeds and smaller, unneeded plants out by eating them efficiently as they wander around their domain regularly, and will also eat up many pests. They adore slugs and snails as a delicious snack so can help keep these at a lower level; thus, hopefully giving your plants such as lettuces, courgettes and strawberries half a chance to grow or fruit successfully.
However, naturally there are drawbacks to having ducks in the garden too. They do create a lot of mess and muck which can put people off and they can destroy precious plants as they enjoy eating some. However, careful planning and animal husbandry can ensure you get the best out of your feathery friends assisting in your garden.
