ON YOUR PLOT

This month we feature two readers who have found growing their own veg to be life changing

READERS’ PLOTS

TRISH QUARTLY FROM OXFORDSHIRE

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GROWING VEG?

I started growing veg in 2011 when I built the first bed. I have six raised beds now, giving about 194 sq ft.

WHAT VARIETY OF VEGETABLE CAN YOU RECOMMEND?

Lettuce. As a novice I was surprised by its resilience, to me and the weather. Easy to grow from seed. I always let one plant go to seed and save the seed for the following year. My gardening friends benefit as I always, without fail, sow too many for my patch!

DO YOU GROW IN CONTAINERS?

I grow bush tomatoes in pots, the larger the pot the better. I keep about four pots, armed with the sack truck I deliver another two to a couple of older neighbours, another to a non-gardening mate. I usually have to stand the pots on upturned terracotta pots to prevent the tomatoes touching the ground and getting nibbled by slugs. Many tomatoes are gifted to other neighbours, friends and family.
