PAINTERLY pertectiou

New allotment holder Katie Lane has taken to growing with apparent ease, demonstrating how a plot can be both productive and beautiful, feeding body and soul. Benedict Vanheems travels down to Hampshire to take a tour

There are two types of allotment. Traditional plots are filled with serried rows of vegetables, neat and standing to attention like troops in a line-up.They’re pleasing to the eye in their own way, particularly if you’re a stickler for military-like order. And then there are the bucolic plots, essentially evolutions of the cottage garden where a painterly crowd of veg, fruit and flowers jostle for attention with stunning effect.

Plot 15c on the North Baddesley allotment gardens is definitely one of the latter – a tranquil haven that feeds both body and soul. Everywhere you look there’s evidence of its owner’s artistic eye, one that balances abundance with beauty, a groaning harvest basket with somewhere genuinely lovely to sit and take it all in.

FROM THE GROUND UP

The allotment is the creative playground of Katie Lane, one of a new generation of allotment holders challenging the traditional and showing, with apparent ease, how a plot can be several things at once: fruit and vegetable garden, nature reserve, and bolthole to enjoy some well-earned peace and quiet.
