Make a Loganberry support

Hybrid berries such as loganberry (crossed between a raspberry and blackberry) have long stems that are best tied in to supports.Joyce Russell suggests a method of support that uses canes and posts.

Loganberry plants can be prolific and bear tasty large fruits, but they are also wild and unruly things. Stems grow to 8ft (2.5m) in length and thorns can be vicious from tip to base (note to any new grower: buy the thornless, sweet-fruiting variety with the memorable name of LY654!).

You need a reasonable-sized garden to contain just one plant and if you want to keep stems under control then you need some form of support system. For a row of plants, and plants spaced at 8ft (2.5m) apart, this usually means a frame and wire support structure that will stay in place for many years. For the average backyard gardener with a single plant, there are simpler options.

STARTING POINT

If you are an organised sort of person then you will probably choose a sunny site and build a frame that allows for the spread of a fully grown loganberry plant. Only when this is done, do you position a new plant with care: dig a large hole and fill with compost and a scatter of fish blood and bone meal; firm the plant in and prune stems back to 10in (25cm) and a good strong bud.
