With the leaves turning from green to russet, the ethereal misty mornings and the last few precious golden sunny days to savour, autumn really is my favourite time of year. In this issue we are celebrating all the fabulous things this season brings. On page 36 we take a look at the hips, hawes and berries that are ripe in our hedgerows at the moment, along with some delicious recipe ideas for making the most of this free food source. Autumn also sees the British game season getting underway and, on page 54, we meet a Sussex gamekeeper to discover how he combines traditional skills with 21st century estate life. We also visit some of Britain’s hedgelayers who are keeping this age-old country practice alive (p.100). Autumn is when the rutting season begins for our red deer stags. Learn more about this dramatic ritual and where you can see our majestic red deer, along with the five other species of deer in the UK, on page 88. October is the time of year for Hallowe’en fun and on page 110 you can find 10 ghoulish ghost walks throughout the UK that mix hauntingly good fun with a healthy dose of history, while on page 104, discover why our British bats don’t really deserve their horror movie reputation. Finally, make sure you turn to page 84 to see the wonderful winning images from our 2014 photographic competition and find out how you can buy your copy of the 2015 LandLove calendar featuring all 12 winning shots. P.S. We are now on Pinterest and Instagram, so do join us online and share your favourite images with us – we’d love to see more of your photos.

I loved this magazine when it was in publication but only managed to buy 3 issues before it was discontinued. Delighted to find back copies in a digital format so thank you Pocketmags! Jacquie, Kirkintilloch, Scotland. Reviewed 04 April 2020
