MAGPIE CAFÉ 1

The Magpie Café flaunts its reputation for serving the ‘World’s Best Fish and Chips’, and so summertime queues can stretch along the street. Takeaway fish and chips costs £4.95; the sit-down restaurant is more expensive, but offers a wide range of seafood dishes, from grilled sea bass to paella (magpiecafe.co.uk; 14 Pier Rd, Whitby; 11.30am– 9pm; mains from £9.99).

JEREMY’S 2

A fantastic neighbourhood bistro run by the eponymous chef who won his Michelin credential with Marco Pierre White, this off-the-beaten-track restaurant in Scarborough sports an Art-Deco ambience and a menu that blends the best of British produce with French inventiveness. Book at weekends (jeremys.co; 33 Victoria Park Av; 6pm–9.30pm Wed–Sat, 12pm–3pm Sun, closed Mon & Tue; mains from £16.50).
