As the days get longer, blooms start to appear in the gardens of Paris, the river banks burst into life and pavement cafés throng with locals – it’s a charming time to visit the City of Light.

Bordered by shaded, leafy towpaths, the charming Canal Saint-Martin (saved by local residents who rallied against plans to concrete it over) is a tranquil place to stroll, cycle or take a boat trip along. Old swing-bridges pivot to let boats pass through, offbeat boutiques line the way and there’s a bevy of interesting cafés and bars to pop into.
