WALK ON THE Wildside

Not many things compare to the thrill of seeing Africa’s Big Five in the wild. But if you want to be in with a chance of tracking them all down, you need to enlist the experts. Try one of these itineraries, each designed to get you up close and personal with one of nature’s giants

Over the last century, Africa’s apex predator has suffered from the effects of hunting, but prides of lions are still found in good numbers across sub-Saharan Africa. For your best chance of spotting them you need to head to Kenya’s Masai Mara, where the fertile floodplains attract one of the planet’s greatest concentrations of life.

Travel with Rainbow Tours and you’ll stay in Governors’ Camp on the banks of the river. Spend your nights in comfortable en-suite tents and rise at dawn for an early morning game drive. Lions do a lot of their hunting in the half light, and the herds of wildebeest and antelope offer a tempting breakfast for the whole pride.

Other features take in film directors' favourite shooting spots in Paris; the Bay Area of California on the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love; and Lisbon, a city best understood through the Portuguese emotion of 'saudade'.
