Idol the day away

Durga is the mother goddess in Hinduism - Durga Puja celebrates her defeat of the buffalo demon Mahishasura

I took this picture during Durga Puja, a celebration of the homecoming of Hindu deity Durga. One evening, I stepped out to capture the flavour of the festival at a pandal (a temporary structure) in northern Kolkata. I joined a long queue of visitors, and when I finally entered, the atmosphere was electric. The pandal was decorated with handmade materials, and elegant lighting lent it a unique charm. I was enthralled by its ambience and intricacy – like the fine details of the lanterns and the idol of the goddess. This picture reminds me of the beauty of the evening, when culture and mythology combined so wonderfully with creativity.
