From the domestic dramas of Coronation Street to the grumpy lyrics of Morrissey, the aesthetics of 20th-century Northern England have long exerted a powerful hold on the global imagination – something explored in a new exhibition at Somerset House. North: Fashioning Identity explains how the land between the River Trent and Hadrian’s Wall has influenced fashion and design. Exhibits span the decades: floral 1960s wallpaper, 1980s tracksuits and 1990s parka jackets all star, with familiar Northern faces, like Agyness Deyn and Abbey Clancy featuring. The influence of Manchester’s ‘Madchester’ era dominates: look out for vintage Factory Records designs and Adidas trainers inspired by the infamous Hacienda nightclub.
