Getting there

BA, easyJet, Ryanair and TAP Air Portugal fly direct to Porto from Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Manchester (Gatwick from £120;

Getting around

Many of Porto’s main sights are walkable, but it also has an inexpensive and efcient public transport system. A 24-hour pass (£6.50; gets you unlimited use of the entire network except trams, but these vintage vehicles are the more atmospheric way to get around. There are three lines, and a single ticket costs £2.70. The Uber taxi app also operates in the city and is exceptionally cheap.
