Behind the Scenes

How our team of writers and photographers made the January issue

Gary Latham's image of New York (p72)

I wanted to shoot the New York skyline in a retro-movie kind of way, to suit the story. When I got to Brooklyn Heights an hour or two before sunset, the cloud formation was very dramatic, a prelude to a hurricane which passed the next day. I like to instil a sense of drama in my photos (clear blue skies are a nightmare for me!), so it was a case of right time, right place. I chose to crop out the foreground as I felt it was distracting. The clouds were only like that for a few fleeting seconds and made the shot very dynamic – it's important to always be focussed and aware of what's happening around you, and ready to press the shutter.
