Argentina’s Lake District

Getting there

British Airways lies direct from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini International – known as Ezeiza (from £890; ba.com). From here, Aerolineas Argentinas lies onward to the small airport just east of San Carlos de Bariloche, usually shortened to Bariloche (from £130; aerolineas.com.ar). British nationals do not currently need a visa to enter Argentina.

Getting around

Public transport around Bariloche is sparse and unreliable so hiring a vehicle is advisable for exploring the lakes and mountains. This can be done easily at the airport (from £40 per day; sixt.co.uk). Most roads are metalled; check whether you’re insured for of-road driving.
