San Sebastián is a gastronomic delight

One of the best dining cities in the world, Spain’s Basque Country food capital is crammed with pintxos bars, sleek seafood restaurants and gourmet institutions.
Pintxos bars abound in San Sebastián’s Parte Vieja (Old Town)

Hidden in a back alley near the Museo San Telmo, this unfussy bar is often touted as San Sebastián’s best for pintxos. It offers miniature nueva cocina vasca (Basque nouvelle cuisine) from a creative kitchen; order delights such as butter-soft calf cheeks in red wine (; Calle de 31 de Agosto 28; closed Mon; pintxos from £2).

A classic pintxos bar in San Sebastian’s old town, going since 1959, La Viña’s counter groans with a smorgasbord of delectable small bites, and thick, dark jamón haunches hang from the ceiling. Don’t miss the tender artichoke hearts and also the creamy cheesecake, baked fresh to a secret recipe each day (; Calle de 31 de Agosto 3; closed Mon; pintxos from £1.50).
