How our team of writers and photographers made the June issue

Justin Foulkes’s shot of the Empty Quarter dunes, Oman (p82)

Though they are incredibly beautiful, deserts can also be a photographer’s worst nightmare– the tiniest flecks of sand can get stuck in your camera mechanism and destroy thousands of pounds of equipment. Luckily, this time I’d come prepared – I’d packed a pump to blow away the sand, and a camera cover improvised from a complimentary hairnet I took from a hotel. For this shot, I climbed to the top of the biggest dune I could see, just as the sun was setting – in the absence of any alternatives, senior features writer Oliver Smith was the model.
