Our picks of the most incredible self-catering city pads, beach houses, castles and cabins around the world

Settings rarely come any more heroic than Coco & Belle – a traditional cave house perched on the vertigo-inducing steep cliffs of Santorini. Cool, whitewashed rooms have timber furnishings and cavernous ceilings to provide respite from the harsh Cycladic sun. Come sunset, however, there is only one place you’ll want to be: on the rooftop terrace or veranda, for epic views over the submerged caldera from which the volcanic island itself was formed.

Cave in to the view

When owner Joanne imagined her perfect Balinese retreat, she dreamt mostly of the view it would have, of rice terrace and jungle. And that’s exactly what she got at Villa Abadi. On the edge of a small village and a couple of miles from the beach, the bright house is beautifully decorated in modern Asian style, and offers a wonderful private escape. And those views? Best enjoyed from the palm-tree lined pool, cocktail in hand.

Artist Tessa knows how to show her Georgian apartment to striking effect. The bones of the building are pure Baronial, with tall ceilings, marble fIreplaces and original shutters, but the enormous rooms are stuffed full of homeliness. Individual quirks, such as the host’s own paintings on the boldly coloured walls, abound. New Town’s plentiful restaurants and bars are close by, and Tessa is only too glad to point out her favourites.
