Costume Drama

The Photographer’s Story

The Venice Carnival (Carnevale) is the definition of a festival. With its big crowds, excited atmosphere and ornate costumes at every turn, it makes the city feel like the centre of the universe. I’ve loved Venice since I first visited at 18, and decided to go to the festival and photograph the masked models that are one of its main attractions. They come from all over the world, many designing and making their costumes themselves – a long process, with some spending a full year on them. At Carnevale, they’re like rock stars, groups and photographers following them around and trying to get their attention. Some are dressed elegantly, while others look outlandish – there’s a real variety.
