Getting lost

Take a wrong turn, or follow your nose, and anything can happen, from enlightenment or a blissfully early night to communing with semi-wild pigs

Jack Palfrey, assistant editor of @JPalfers

I WAS IN PALOLEM, GOA, AT THE time heralded as the region’s best-kept secret but, in reality, swarming with foreigners. Eager to escape, a friend and I managed to find a local gent who was willing to lend us his jeep for the day (oicial car rental isn’t really a thing in India). Afer an impromptu driving lesson (during which I stalled the Jeep three times) he – very unsurely – handed over the keys. Within 15 minutes, we were well and truly lost, racing along weaving country lanes with the roof down. Afer hours skirting busy beach resorts, we ended up at a stretch of sand with nobody else on it, except for one man lazing outside a tiny hut selling coconuts. We bought one each, sat on the sand and toasted our good luck.
