Extraordinary Places to Stay: design hotels

In association with BRITISH AIRWAYS

It’s hard to imagine it was ever home to anything but the grandest of hotels, but the Beaumont started off life as a garage. The original 1920s Art Deco façade is very much on display; everything beyond that is new – not that you’d guess it with its impeccable period styling. Noel Coward and Agatha Christie may never have swished through the revolving doors to the foyer or ordered champagne cocktails in the hotel’s American Bar – but you’ll certainly believe they did. WILL I BE CONVERTED? It’s hard to enter the Beaumont and not emit a hearty ‘What ho!’, so successful is its recreation of a fictional golden age that immediately brings to mind Jeeves and Wooster. Service is discreet and exemplary; antiques, artwork and black-and-white portraits of the great and the good dot the public spaces; and rooms are beautifully calm, comfortable spaces accented with walnut and marble.
