editor’s note

If this issue of Lonely Planet magazine delivers on its promise, it will leave you with widened eyes and a rumbling stomach. Tempting food discoveries can be found throughout our pages, from our latest Photo Challenge – on the theme of ‘Feast’ (p36) – to our collection of many of the world’s most iconic dishes and where best to taste them (p77). In between, writer Summer Sewell and photographer Alanna Hale take to the Oregon food trail (p64), exploring the unique culinary culture of America’s Pacific Northwest. Right now I’ll confess that until I had read our feature, I only knew a little about this state perched on the northern tip of California. Oregon does have a reputation for melancholy mistiness – verging at times on dampness – and I learnt that its climate leads to a great wealth of produce, all sampled on our tour: the grapes for exceptional pinot noirs; the pure water used to make saké; the lavender, honey, fat olives and extremely exotic mushrooms. Meanwhile the waters of the Pacific Ocean deliver one hearty discovery that I would most definitely welcome, eaten in the face of a stiff British coastal breeze: battered albacore tuna with chips – or fries!
