Budget Chicago

Low-key and cultured, America’s Windy City has bragging rights for its comedy heritage, live-music clubs and public art – much of which can be enjoyed on the cheap.
The Frank Gehrydesigned bandshell in Millennium Park

Public art is everywhere in Chicago, and Millennium Park, the playful heart of the city, is full of it. Anish Kapoor’s silvery smooth Cloud Gate (aka ‘The Bean’) is perhaps the most famous installation, but also don’t miss Frank Gehry’s swooping silver bandshell. Free concerts waft through the park in summer (; 201 E Randolph St; 6am–11pm; free).
