Celebrating its 25th year in turntable manufacture, AVID HIfihas built an astonishing range of audiophile products with unique engineering principles. Everything stems from Conrad Mas’ determined quest to build the perfect turntable. Gary Walker and John Pickford visit the company’s Cambridgeshire HQ to find out whether he’s succeeded

The truth, nothing more, nothing less. British manufacturer AVID HIFI’s mission statement is a commitment to no-compromise engineering and pure, unveiled audiophile sound. That fundamental belief started for founder Conrad Mas as a 16-year-old when a school friend told him he’d built the best turntable in the world, using the Connoisseur bd1 kit. His friend was, of course, wrong.

“I didn’t really have that much interest in audio equipment as a teenager,” Mas tells Long Live Vinyl as we tour the company’s facility on an unassuming industrial estate near the Cambridgeshire village of Kimbolton. “Music for me then was listening to Radio Caroline under the pillow when my parents had told me to go to bed.
