David Bowie’s final studio album is a magic eye painting. For three blissful days following its release, Blackstar was widely heralded as the best album he’d made since the 70s - perhaps even one of the best he’d made ever. The Next Day had been a triumphant return and a fitting reunion with the band that had seen him through much of the 90s, but Blackstar suggested something greater. It was darker in hue, sure, but it also assured us that an adventurous new future still lay ahead for the greatest rock star of all time.
And then David Bowie died.
