As the charismatic Huey Morgan gets set to hit the road in support of his band’s long-awaited new album Another Mimosa, the multi-platinum king of cool talks to Long Live Vinyl about music, fame, fortune and why there’s no shame to his game. Words by Dan Biggane

When Huey Morgan and his merry band of mobsters first gatecrashed the mid-90s Britpop party with their super-slick smash hit Scooby Snacks, the UK welcomed the New York outlaws with open arms, and boy didn’t it look fun to be a Fun Lovin’ Criminal? Suited ’n’ booted and with one eyebrow raised, everything was cool and everything was smooth for wise guy Morgan, the international playboy with a dry wit and a shift y, roguish charm. First impressions are difficult to shake and, more than 20 years later, it is heartening to discover that the Fun Lovin’ Criminals frontman remains whip-smart and 100 per cent passionate, excited and articulate when talking about his musical influences and Another Mimosa, FLC’s first record since 2010.

“Next year, we’re looking to make a full-length album of original new material,” confesses the fast-talking Huey. “So, we’re just looking to exercise our muscles with Another Mimosa and to get those creative juices flowing again. We’re not doing it because we need the money or the attention; we just wanna make music and do something we can have fun with.

“We’re the Fun Lovin’ Criminals and nothing is off limits. I listened back to the recordings and I wondered if there is any other band out there that can combine hip-hop, NY freestyle, jazz, rock, blues, salsa, jazz… like we can.
