Mapping your Welsh ancestors

Posted Sunday, 3 July 2016   |   1325 views   |   General Interest   |   Comments (0) Simon Wills pores over an amazing tithe maps digitisation programme that is gathering pace in Wales, and discusses its exciting development with project manager Einion Gruffudd.

The Cynefin project aims to repair and digitise around 1,200 tithe maps from Wales and transcribe more than 30,000 pages of documents that are linked to them.

The tithe maps were produced between 1838 and 1850 to ensure all tithes (local taxes on income) were paid, and they cover more than 95 per cent of Wales. They have associated index or ‘apportionment’ documents that name the landowners and residents, and show how much they had to pay.

A crowdsourcing website has been set up to allow anyone to view the maps and contribute to the project by volunteering online: find out more at cynefin.archiveswales.org.uk.
