MAKE UP YOUR MIND

MAKING MINDFULNESS A TOOL IN YOUR RUNNING ARSENAL NOT ONLY INCREASES YOUR ENJOYMENT, BUT CAN ALSO BOOST PERFORMANCE

MINDFUL RUNNING

Mindfulness is one of the reasons we feel so refreshed after a run”, explains performance coach Steve Chamberlain (stevechamberlain.co.uk). “Running forces us to come back into the present moment when the stresses of life can fill our heads.” Once we’re aware of this, says Chamberlain, we can harness mindfulness to improve both our experience and performance when running.

William Pullen, a London-based psychotherapist, takes clients on Dynamic Running Therapy sessions through The Capital’s parks as part of treatment for a variety of conditions including anxiety, trauma and depression.

He firmly believes that all runners can benefit from applying mindfulness to their training sessions. “One of the strengths of mindfulness is that it asks you to prioritise what’s happening in the here and now”, says Pullen, author of Running With Mindfulness.

About Men's Running

Give your running a boost with the April issue of Men’s Running – our nutrition special. Whether you’re in need of a reliable mid-marathon energy gel, a pre-run pick-me-up or a recovery-boosting shake, this month’s Best in Test is your go-to guide for the best sports nutrition products on the market – as decided by our team of independent runners. Elsewhere, spring marathoners can take advice from our very own marathon man, Steve Way, who tells you exactly what you should be doing with two months to go. Or, if off-road is your thing, resident trail guru Matt Maynard’s ‘Trail Skills’ feature explains how to hone the skills you’ll need to excel when the going gets muddy. All that, plus the usual training advice, race reports and nutrition know-how to help you run stronger than ever this spring.
