Over the years I’ve experimented with getting out on the trails at all hours of the day. There is no right or wrong time to go. Being flexible enough to run trails morning, noon or night means you are more likely to get out there. And breaking established routines is the spice of life that tempted you off the roads in the first place.

An impromptu run to work across the hills is only possible if a shower is working at the other end, though. (Sheep poo has a habit of clearing out crowded offices.) And the thrill from a great night run is buzz-killed next morning if muddy prints across the kitchen prove a deadringer for your trainers. So here’s what to expect when running at different times of the day, and some tricks for staying out of trouble in the process.

EARLY BIRD

The morning trail runner is an irritatingly energetic bloke. You might catch him bounding home through the woods at the beginning of your weekend run. Usually, though, he is out soaking up a mid-week sunrise while us normal folk are still pressing the snooze button. He is organised, sticks to the plan and uses his time outdoors to order his thoughts for the day.
