Ah, the Spanish seaside. The sun, the sand, the freezing rain, the stormy clouds… The San Sebastian Marathon, to throw a spoiler out there, was excellent. The late- November San Sebastian weather was not. Only 24 hours earlier, the weather was no better and my confidence was plummeting along with the temperature. Having surfed a wave of luck and caution over the previous few years, I have rarely been injured. That’s not to say I haven’t used a megaphone every time I get a little niggle. This time, however, the pain – akin to having a nail hammered into the side of my foot – was genuine and persistent.
