Is modelling cool? I hate to say it, but probably not. Dorky, nerdy, and a whole raft of other quite uncomplimentary labels but, cool? Well I suppose it really depends on your frame of reference I. In my little neck of the woods at school, the perceived perception was that you were cool if you played Rugby and / or Cricket. You were cool if you were smart. You were cool if you were popular with girls and you were ultra-cool if you could do all of those things.
After school, the prevailing perception was that you were cool if you went to University, played rugby, did okay in your exams, drank lots of beer and you were popular with girls. After University, you were cool if you had a “fast track” to anywhere, knew the latest bands and you were popular with girls.
In primary school I had lots of friends who made models. With the transition to high school I kept my interest in the hobby low key. It was my “dark passenger” so to speak. It seemed to be uncool and only fit for kids. I was yet to come out of the modelling closet. As the years progressed, I eased myself back into the hobby and looking back I think it was more to do with getting more comfortable in my own skin, hence the change in attitude, and as a result of this I came out of the self-imposed modelling exile. I was a modeller and proud of it!
