Daimler Ferret Scout Car
My opportunity to command a Ferret scout car came about when I was chatting with Rob O’Brien at the Tank Museum and mentioned to him that Mike Hayton, the Workshop Manager, had said he would let me drive one of their Ferrets. He didn’t know when, but to remind him. Rob immediately said ‘You can always come out for a ride in mine if you like. To see what its like from up top’
Arriving at Rob’s home near Basingstoke I knew I’d got the right place as the Ferret was already out of its garage and raring to go. Well almost. The first thing to do was to adjust the wing mirrors so Rob had some rearward vision. The mirrors have to be moved right in before the Ferret will fit in Rob’s garage and, yes, it does fit in an ordinary single garage - just. Mirrors adjusted, Rob walked me around the vehicle telling me all about it and pointing out where I was to sit, what I needed to watch out for and so on.
